Escaping PoC Purgatory - Lessons Learned Scaling Databricks with the Government of Canada

Last week, we hosted a dynamic session on overcoming the challenges of scaling Databricks solutions within the Government of Canada. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion!

We covered common data challenges seen in past projects with the public sector, an overview of Databricks, past projects and lessons learned, and our Databricks Launchpad framework.

What is PoC Purgatory?

It's when a small-scale proof-of-concept (PoC) proves it’s value but fails to move into full scale production.

Often this is due to either a disconnection from the organization’s broader priorities, which could have been an issue with the problem definition prior to the PoC. It could also be due to technical bottlenecks in scalability and adoption. These are challenges that would prevent the solution from being implemented at scale.

These PoCs can be AI and data projects including chat bots, dashboards and analytics, or simply data consolidation from different sources.

Key strategies to escape PoC Purgatory:

  1. Plan for production from day one

  2. Prioritize and tackle high-risk items early

  3. Streamline communication and stakeholder engagement

  4. Emphasize data quality with rigorous testing

  5. Address scalability and governance from the outset

  6. Harness automation and modern deployment platforms

Through these lessons and strategies, we developed Databricks Launchpad—a toolkit designed to help teams adopt best practices early in the PoC process and successfully transition from development to production.

Stay tuned as we dive deeper into how Launchpad can drive innovation and accelerate your journey to production success.
